It was Kevin Rowe (also of the Foreign Language Department of the School of Education) who introduced me to this part of Australian history and who has already posted a text on our blog.
When Kevin Rudd made his formal and public apology to the Aborigines on behalf of the Australian government, I have not cessed to take this issue into my English courses and discuss it with students as much as I could and can. It is a way to deconstruct the "beautiful" and thought to be highly democratic history of England and discover the many stains they have scattered throughout the world in their colonies and others. I am not to say with this that only the English have done wrong or that they have done nothing good. I would rather say that the more we know about countries and nationalities, the more we can be critical towards them and our own countries and the more light and understanding is shed upon present times.
For these purposes, I have used several resources from the web, namely articles from The Guardian: "Snatched from home for a racist ideal" (see also the worksheet I created for this text), "I was holding to Mum's dress", "Australia apologises to the Aborigines" and "We lost our heritage, we lost everything". I also dug up the 500-page-long report "Bringing them home" conducted by government officials and chanced upon this website called Creative Spirits with indepth information on Australia's Stolen Generations.

Cláudia Martins's blog
As a teacher in the three years of this degree, I would just like to call readers' attention to the fact that in my semi-official blog (www.claudia-sn-martins.blogspot.com) I am writing a series of posts called awe-inspiring events and people.
Although they follow my personal interests and are necessarily biased views, they could be useful for those interested in the history and culture of English-speaking countries, and could serve as a complement to your English literature and culture courses.

Celebration of the 25 years from Zeca Afonso's death
The Portuguese Deparment of our school invited the Degree in Foreign Languages: English and Spanish to participate in the celebration of the 25 years from the death of Zeca Afonso, an iconic Portuguese musician and singer who became famous for his interventionist songs.
Although our participation might be somewhat restricted due to the core of the degree, i.e. no formal musical education and no connection to the literatures and cultures studied, we agreed upon the translation of several songs into English and Spanish. These songs will be chosen according to the events they will be integrated into: one of the projects is the production of a pedagogical CD in which songs will be dealt with, bearing in mind the interests and needs of children from several levels; another could be the translation of some other songs part of the main event in February, 23rd, or others to be done throughout the semester.
I shall expect volunteers for this translation among the 3 years of the degree.

Mi familia y sus profesiones
Mi padre y mi madre son vendedores, tienen un supermercado. Mi hermano menor, José, es estudiante y mi hermano mayor, Carlos, trabaja en el centro comercial en una tienda de ropa por lo que es vendedor. Mi cuñada, Sandra, trata de niños en guardería, es educadora.
Mi prima Anabela es profesora de educación física y su hermano Paulo es carpintero, hace reparaciones y mobiliario.
Mi prima Liliana y mi prima Dora son contables. Paulo, marido de Dora, trabaja en una panadería y su trabajo es hacer pasteles.
Mi prima Helena es ingeniera textil y sus padres, Manuel y Cecilia tienen un café y su trabajo es servir los clientes de acuerdo con sus peticiones, por ejemplo, café con leche, tostadas, tortas, cerveza, té y otros.
Mi primo Bernardo es militar, su hermana Martin es ingeniera y su hermana Fátima es arquitecta, su trabajo es hacer el diseño de viviendas, y sus padres, Josefa y Amílcar, son agricultores, cultivan zanahorias, manzanas, peras, pimientos, frijoles, pepino para venderlo después. Lo hijo mayor de Fátima, Marco, estudia en la universidad de Peniche, Geología del mar.
Mi prima Marlene está estudiando en la universidad de Lisboa en el curso del deporte y también es una atleta, practica atletismo.

Futuro de Tania
Señorita veo que tendrás un bueno año por variadas razones. Estudiarás mucho por eso tendrás buenos resultados, mucho suceso y así tendrás mucho dinero.
Después de terminar los estudios viajarás mucho por todo el mundo y vivirás un año en cada país. En uno de los países conocerás un hombre muy guapo que te irá hacer mucho feliz con ese hombre irás tener tres hijos. Cada uno de tus hijos nacerá en diferentes países, uno en Italia, otro en Francia y por fin el último hijo nacerá en Nueva York pero ni todo será bello en tu vida. En el país donde vivirás, pasará un tsunami que te llevará todo, el coche, la casa y tú fijarás sin nadie y te quedarás muy mala. Tendrás que empezar a vivir todo de nuevo y trabajarás mucho para tener todo otra vez.
Volverás para Portugal con tu familia y trabajarás en una discoteca donde conocerás muchas personas que te ayudarán mucho para que tu vida empezase otra vez a ser bella. Así serás mucho feliz y tu vida irá mejorar mucho. Tus hijos se casarón y irás tener muchos nietos.

Mi día normal…
Por la mañana me levanto sobre las sete y media, me ducho y me visto. Un poco más tarde, tomo un desayuno rápido y ligero, cereales con leche. A las ocho y media voy para la universidad a pie. Como vivo cerca de la escuela no necesito de coger el autobús. Sobre las nueve tengo la primera clase que es de francés después de diez y media a dos tengo español y termina mi mañana de clases. Voy para casa a comer y tengo un rato para descansar de dos y media a tres y media.
Por la tarde, tengo clase de historia, de cuatro a seis. Luego vuelvo a casa y voy de compras, después recojo las compras y voy a practicar deporte que a mí me gusta mucho. Mi deporte preferido es natación, pero también me gusta mucho caminar.
Sobre las ocho hago los deberes. Más tarde, a las nueve y media ceno, normalmente sopa y una manzana después recojo la cocina. A las diez y media veo la televisión, me encanta escuchar música también y leer. Sobre las once y media de la noche voy a la cama y duermo.
Al día siguiente comienza todo otra vez.

Viajes Terribles
En cada viaje que hago, tengo una buena estrella que siempre me acompaña. Todos los viajes que he hecho sola ocurrieron siempre cosas terribles, verdaderas desgracias.
El primer viaje fue a Madeira en Portugal en 1995. Me encontraba en Madeira de vacaciones y un día en que estaba haciendo el almuerzo en la cocina empezó a caer lluvia torrencial enseguida empecé a escuchar muchos ruidos muchos barullos y viento muy fuerte. Empecé a asustarme con tanto ruido y fue corriendo ver que se pasaba por la ventana, solo vi agua por todo lado, en las calles, dentro de las tiendas por todo lado mismo y la tierra empezaba a quedar frágil entonces vi una sierra a desplomarse fue ahí que me asusté mismo. Ni pensé más en el almuerzo solo quería salir de casa y escapar de la lluvia y de el agua fuerte que se hacía sentir en las calles inundadas. ¡Qué gran susto apañé! Fue una experiencia traumática pero podría haber tenido menos suerte y haber fallecido.
El segundo viaje traumática fue en 2000 en la China. El 25 de diciembre de 2000 yo me encontraba en una ciudad da China por motivos laborales. Hacia las ocho de la mañana y durante casi cuarenta minutos sentí que el mundo rugía. El edificio donde estaba abanó todo, de repente llegaron los gritos me asusté mucho entonces salí corriendo pelas escaleras del edificio, una vez más una estrella de buena suerte me acompañó. Fueron momentos traumáticos de mi vida más ahora estoy bien y antes de salir de casa para ir de vacaciones o para trabajar fuera del país voy pensar muy bien para no acontecer más desgracias, ni a mí ni a quien va conmigo de vacaciones.

¡Hola!
Me llamo Diana Subtil. Nací el día 16 de diciembre de 1988. Tengo 21 años. Soy del signo sagitario.
Mi ciudad es Guimarães pero mis padres son de Coimbra que es una ciudad del centro de Portugal. Mi padre trabajaba en Guimarães donde conoció mi madre y después se casó y se quedaran a vivir en Guimarães. Estudié siempre en Guimarães, estuve sin estudiar 3 años porque no supe lo que yo quería estudiar entonces fui a trabajar. Pasado eses 3 años finalmente supe que quería estudiar Lenguas para Relaciones Internacionales. Entré en la universidad de Bragança y aquí estoy ahora.
Yo soy muy simpática, trabajadora, ambiciosa y estoy siempre mucho alegre. Cuando tengo tiempo libre hago mucho deporte, mi deporte preferido es natación pero también mi gusta mucho correr. También mi encanta leer, ver la tele y escuchar música.
Mis padres se llaman Maria Manuela y José Carlos. Mi madre tiene 49 años y mi padre tiene 51.
Tengo dos hermanos, un se llama José y u otro se llama Carlos, José es el hermano más pequeño y tiene 17 años, Carlos es mayor y tiene 27 años.
¡Me encanta mi familia!

New year, new life?
Mea culpa for the absence of posts in the last eight months, though not intentionally.
A new school year has started and a sea of new faces have arrived to this school of ours: all of which are more than welcome to participate, contribute and comment on this blog that should be owned by everyone, from teachers to students. I do hope to see short introduction about all of you in the meantime.
Another year has also started: the year of 2012 and along with it a new direction to your degree. Despite the general ideia of hope against hope, I look forward to seeing everyone help each other and communicate. Communication is the solution for every problem and the only acceptable way.
May we use our languages to do so. See you around.
