Guidelines for posting

Any student of the English-Spanish degree is welcome to post information on this post, but not only the student-manager, as well as the supervising teacher, will review and edit the texts. The reason to do this is to make them comply to the rules of the English language and "correctness" or better perhaps acceptability. We would like people to read the posts here and find them reliable and "true" English, if there is such a thing... Apart from that, we will also aim at writing in British English and avoiding colloquial language, too specific of spoken English.
Any doubts or querries, leave your comment or contact us by email - english.spanish.foreignlanguages@gmail.com.

Am I right or am I right?

Although those who know me as a teacher acknowledge I'm not really a know-it-all "species", there are times when I know for sure I am right. One of these cases had to do with the verb to use in the context of hiring a house or apartment: should it be hire or let? Most chose 'hire', though of course the correct answer was 'let'.
The context demanded the idea of owning estate which you would be interested in letting; thus, having someone renting (paying for) it.
Nothing better than London on my way to Istanbul to prove this in a thousand and one cases. Here's the hard proof.

Roy

ROY

My name is Roy and I come from a place called earth. I was born in South Africa, yes.. it's where the world cup is being held.
It was such a great country to live in, before 1994; nowadays it’s like living in hell…
I left Africa in '94 and went to live in a very very very tiny island called Portugal, but I love the place;it´s got nice people. I spent ten years of my life in the army. I liked it quite a lot…
In the army, I travelled a lot all around the world, then I was kinda kicked out of it… After that life experience, I went to college. I´m in a degree called English/Spanish. I like it; it is cool.
That's all I've got to say for now, next time I will write more…

Tânia D.

Hi, my name is Tânia. I am 28 years old, I’m married and I have two children. I was born in Lisbon. I studied in Lisbon until I was 10 years old and then I went to Spain. I was in Spain until I was 15 years old. When I was 17 years, I was the mother of a girl. Because of this, I had the stop studying. Now, I started my studies. I chose this degree, because I understand the Spanish language. But my biggest problem is the English language. In Spain, I did not learn the English language well. I would like to speak and understand the English language very well. I think that the degree is very difficult
Best regards.

Sara

Hello !
My name is Sara, I’m from Bragança and I am 18 years old. I attend the first year of foreign languages: English/Spanish, and I decided to come to this degree because I have always liked languages. I thought if I came to this degree, it would be a good opportunity to learn more and perhaps take a master in translation, my real passion.
I guess this degree is nice, with nice people and excellent teachers, but they are very demanding which, on the other hand, is good, because they prepare us to be great professionals.

Alexandra

Hello. My name is Alexandra Cabral, I´m 19 years old and I am from Mesão-Frio.
On my holidays, I like to help the others, I am a firefighter.
In my old school, my favourite course was English, so I decided to come to this degree to learn more about this great language.
Spanish is now a language that I like in particular, because it is really interesting and attractive.
My dream is to be a stewardess. It is a job in which I can speak English and Spanish, but if my dream does not take place, I would like to be a teacher.
I hope you enjoy this blog.
Best regards.

Tânia M.

Hi! My name is Tânia, I'm from Valpaços, and I'm 21 years old.
I think that this degree is good because we can learn a lot about these two languages. I also think that the degree should have a course in translation, because I love this course and I would love to be a translator.
I'm in this degree because I love these two languages, but more Spanish. What I love the most in the degree is the Spanish language, Spanish linguistics and English culture. I’m so interested in English because I’m a big fan of Christina Aguilera so……..
People that love these two languages should come to this degree.
I love Spanish because it is a beautiful language, romantic, and it is so beautiful listening to Spanish people speaking. People should learn this beautiful language, I advise you to learn this language.

Isabel

Hello. Everybody!

My name is Isabel Silva.

I am thirty-two years old; I´m from Bragança, but now I am living in Macedo de Cavaleiros.
I have three children, 2 boys (twins) with two, and a girl with six years old.
I am a student-worker.
I´d like to share my own experience about being a student worker: It is great and very exciting.
I am living a wonderful time of my life; I never thought that it could happen to me, because I stopped my classes a long time ago.
One day, I was at home with an old friend; she told me she was going to back to school. At first I thought “she´s crazy”, she can´t be serious, she´s married, children to take care of; she will not have time to do everything that she wants.
My friend started the degree and she is loving the experience. Next year, it will be my turn, I thought “God, help me”, but I´m going to try to do something for myself, starting a degree was something that I always wanted. Because I like to share knowledge with children and stay near them, so if I would able to give classes it would be fantastic for me. Since I started, I´ve already made so many friends, learnt a lot of things that I thought didn´t exist. And all the information that teachers transmit is really worth.
I chose the degree of foreign languages, English and Spanish, and I am not regretting: this is really what I want – to be a teacher of English and Spanish, but with this degree you can also work in a variety group of companies.
When we make something for ourselves and for other people, it´s like you are born again, and humans must feel alive.
Don´t let this opportunity go away, ask for information in http://www.ipb,.pt and try the difference, maybe it´s time to make a change in your life and you should believe that you can.

Filomena

Hello
Welcome to our blog!!!!

My name is Filomena, I´m thirty-six years old and I´m from Castelãos, Macedo de Cavaleiros. I´m married and I have got two wonderful boys. I decided to choose this degree English and Spanish, because are my favourite languages that I can learn. With Spanish, I don´t have any problems, because I lived in Spain when I was fourteen. With English, I have a lot of problems, because I just had three years of English at school. But I´m here to do my best and I hope to be not an expert but a person that knows how to use the language in different contexts. I know that I have hard work during these next years, but I will do it, I swear. For my future, for myself. Finally, I advise you to come to meet us and to learn a lot with our classes.

You will be WELCOME!!!!!

Elizabeth

Hiya! My name is Elizabeth (yes, just like that), I’m 19 years-old and I come from Aveiro.
I’ve always had a thing for languages, I want to learn as many as I want because I just love all these different types of cultures and learning a little bit of every part of the world is enriching for me.
I don’t regret being here, although what I would want was only a course with English, but Spanish is evolving, such as English is, and nowadays it’s really useful to know both languages. Spanish just evolved so much that statistically it’s more or less at the same level as English is, although English is considered the most important one. We will need both of these languages in our future, with the Internet, we will be considered illiterate if we don’t know them.
Bragança is a really beautiful city, its cozy, it’s very welcoming, and people here are really nice, they always have a smile on their faces and they’re willing to help you anytime. The School is great, the teachers of this degree couldn’t have been better, as well as the classmates, I really like it here. We have time to work and time to just joke around. If you really like languages and want to be ahead of things worldwide, then this is the right degree for you. English and Spanish are both rising languages. There are also people that come to do Erasmus and it’s really great to get to know them, you get to learn all about their country and it’s really awesome. For example, we had Erasmus students the first semester, they came from Spain and it was really good because with them we could practice our Spanish. You also can do Erasmus yourself if you’re really the traveling type, and you have the advantage of doing it if you get into this degree, but if not, we will also do trips to both Spain and England to know cities, to practise and be in contact with both culture and language. So it’s really fulfilling.
Since this is a new degree, and has more specific subjects it’s great because we feel special. You will be able to explore many things with both languages: Language, Culture, Linguistics and Literature.
There is no way you can drop out of this degree if you feel it’s too much for you because if you are really that passionate about languages, you will not give up. We get really deep in the learning of both languages and we can do many things with both of them out there with a variety of job opportunities that will allow you to be in touch with what you like and wish to do.
Of course, there are some bad things about it, things aren’t always perfect, and for me, although there’s only a few, what I find bad about it is there is some competition with students that like English more than Spanish and vice-versa. But it’s all good because we help those with difficulties and we are united because we are not a big class. Our schedule is tough at times, it depends on the semester but it’s not really that demanding, and if you like it and/or you have previous knowledge of them, then it’s even greater. I’m sure you won’t regret it.
