Dickens 2012 is the name given to an international celebration of the author’s life and work, intended to mark the bicentenary of his birth, which was on 7th February 1812. He created mainly fiction and short stories, of which we could name a few: The Pickwick Papers, A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Great Expectations, Hard Times...
Many argue he was the greatest writer of the Victorian Age, seconded only by Shakespeare. He had infamous admirers, such as Poe, Tolstoy and Freud, and influenced several contemporary writers, e.g. Jennifer Egan, Stephen King or J. K. Rowling.
Dickens Dream,
painting by Robert William Buss
Dickens achieved fame in 1836 with the publishing of The Pickwick Papers, at the age of 24, emphasised two years later with Oliver Twist. These, among others, are reputed for the passionate social and political critique of Victorian times, which he knew so intiminately since he had worked at the age of 12 in a shoe factory.
